In elementary school, students are immersed in a challenging program that stresses the core curriculum of Religion, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies, while still focusing on the development of the whole Christian person. The elementary school hallways and classrooms are filled with colorful displays of the children’s work, the uplifting voices of teachers who are motivated about what they are teaching, and students who are truly passionate about what they are learning. The curriculum is based on the archdiocesan, national, and state standards, and teachers regularly meet to align with the upper grades and discuss updates. Grades 1 through 3 are self-contained, except for Art, Music, Spanish, Library, and Physical Education, which the students attend at least once a week. In fourth grade, the children prepare for middle school by switching to a departmentalized schedule, having one teacher for Religion and Social Studies, one teacher for Math and Science, and one teacher for English Language Arts and Reading.
A leveled reading program is used by the first and second grade teachers to maximize their time with students by putting students into smaller groups so that they can work to each student’s ability level. To further meet individual needs, first and second grade classrooms share teaching assistants who work in partnership with the lead teachers. Teachers encourage students to develop strong reading and writing skills while participating in oral language activities, such as our annual oratorical competition and spelling bees. The Math program utilizes a spiraling technique in which students are reacquainted with skills throughout the year to ensure understanding. The students enjoy outside recess time daily, with one playground designed specifically for older students.
Our Safety Patrol, comprised of fourth graders, serves the school daily in carpool and serves as role models for younger students in the afternoon. St. Laurence Catholic School focuses on developing higher-level thinking skills and independence while maintaining a balance with the physical and emotional needs of this age group.
We have a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Curriculum in grades PreK-8th, facilitated by our school counselors and reinforced in our classrooms. Social-Emotional learning helps to build a culture of connectedness and empowers students with the skills they need to succeed in school and in life.
